Inv. #18819
Folk Art Carved Horse by Peter Giba
SOLD

Circa 1930-1940s, Peter Giba, Chicago. This superbly carved horse is a charming example of American Folk Art. Known for his ability to capture the realistic form and intrinsic majesty of many different breeds, Peter Giba carved perhaps a thousand pieces during his life. Almost half of them are in the folk art exhibit at the International Museum of the Horse as part of the Mervis collection gifted to them by Sears Roebuck and Company. Unsigned, but deaccessioned from a collection of all Peter Giba carvings, this petite example fits perfectly in any decor requiring an equine accent. Very good condition.

Remarks from Lawrence Jeffrey: β€œTo capture the essence of any subject is amazing, to capture the very soul of the horse speaks to our innermost American dreams.”
Condition: Very good condition.
Hallmarks: none, attributed to Peter Giba.
Measurements: 5 3/4 inches long by 5 1/2 inches high
